Zoe Andrews (b. 1997, London) is driven by a constant exploration of the boundaries between ceramics and drawing. Influenced by the forms and rhythms of Ancient Greek pottery, her work engages movement and light to evoke mood and mystery. This focus on dynamic form is underscored by the fluidity of her materials—whether the malleability of clay on the wheel or the gestural quality of her drawn marks.
Colour plays a central role in Zoe’s practice, serving as both an emotional and expressive tool. She experiments with alternative methods of introducing colour into her ceramics, seeking to preserve the natural luminosity of the clay—often obscured by traditional glazing techniques. Her work is shaped by direct engagement with the material and a strong sense of place, with Zoe extracting pigments from the surrounding landscape to integrate natural colours into her palette.
Zoe’s recent exploration of modular tiles, which she also draws on, offers greater flexibility, allowing her work to evolve with spontaneity and continuous development. Despite this, she remains passionate about throwing on the potter’s wheel, particularly with large bowls, where the interplay between inside and outside spaces creates exciting possibilities for composition.
